Fieldwork: Frederick, Harper’s Ferry, and Antietam

Took the seventh and eighth graders to Harper’s Ferry, the Civil War Medicine Museum, and Antietam Battlefield over two days this week. I wish school could always be like this. My fave moment had nothing to do with John Brown or the Civil War. The kids found a bunch of bumpy gray things on the Bloody Lane Trail…”Eeew,” they exclaimed, “it’s old poop.” I picked one up to their disgust and said “watch.” I cracked open what was in reality a seed pod-probably milkweed or thistle-and I blew the seeds out. Little white tufts floated in the forest sun beams and the kids went chasing them down the path. So much joy and exuberance!
